Clever Girl Finance

Bola Sokunbi

Budget, emergency fund, debt payoff — the unglamorous scaffolding of independence.

Start with the number

Sokunbi's first instruction is to look: total income, total spending, total debt, total assets. Most financial anxiety is fear of the unknown figure, and it drops as soon as the figure is written down.

Money mindset and inherited scripts

She spends real time on what you absorbed about money at home, because the scripts drive the behaviour. Naming them is treated as a prerequisite to any system.

The budget that survives contact

Her budgeting method is deliberately simple and forgiving: known bills, planned savings, then a spending allowance you actually enjoy. A budget that permits nothing is abandoned by week three.

Emergency fund, then debt

A small starter fund first so an emergency does not create new debt, then aggressive payoff — she covers both the avalanche and snowball methods and is pragmatic about picking whichever you'll finish.

Earning and investing

The later chapters push income growth — negotiation, side income, skills — and low-cost index investing through retirement accounts, on the grounds that frugality alone has a ceiling and earning does not.

What to take from it

Automate the boring parts on payday so independence doesn't depend on willpower.

Lines to keep

  • “Most financial fear is fear of a number you haven't looked at.”
  • “A budget that permits nothing is abandoned by week three.”
  • “Frugality has a ceiling. Earning does not.”

Practice

  • · Write your four numbers today: income, spending, debt, savings.
  • · Automate one transfer on payday, however small.
